Product Attribute Groups

MANAGING PRODUCT ATTRIBUTE GROUPS

Document Revision: v1.0

OVERVIEW

Attribute groups organise product attributes into logical sections on the
product form and on the storefront. Each group has a name (one per store
language) and a sort order that controls how groups appear relative to one
another. Individual attributes (for example, "Screen Size" or "Weight") are
created separately under Catalog > Attributes and must be assigned to an
attribute group. Once a group exists, you can add attributes to it and then
assign those attributes to products.

REQUIRED PERMISSION

The signed-in admin user must have modify permission on catalog/attribute_group.

ADD/CREATE NEW: STEP-BY-STEP

1. Go to Catalog > Attributes > Attribute Groups.

2. Click the Insert button (top right).

3. On the form, for each enabled store language:
   a. Enter the Attribute Group Name (required, 3 to 64 characters).
Each language has its own input field with a flag icon.

4. Enter a Sort Order (defaults to 0 on create). Lower numbers appear first
when groups are listed on the product form and storefront.

5. Save the group using one of these buttons:
   - Save       Saves the group and returns to the attribute group list.
   - Apply      Saves the group and re-opens the updated form to continue.
   - Cancel     Discards changes and returns to the list.

EXAMPLE: CREATE AN ATTRIBUTE GROUP — "Specifications"

Goal: add a group to hold technical product attributes such as screen size,
weight, and battery life.

  Attribute Group Name (English): Specifications
  Sort Order:                     1

Steps:

  1. Catalog > Attributes > Attribute Groups > Insert
  2. English: enter "Specifications"
  3. Sort Order: 1
  4. Click Save

Result: the list shows "Specifications" with Sort Order 1. The group is now
available in the Attribute Group dropdown when creating or editing attributes
under Catalog > Attributes (for example, add an attribute "Screen Size" and
assign it to the Specifications group).

EDIT: STEP-BY-STEP

1. Go to Catalog > Attributes > Attribute Groups.

2. Locate the group in the list.

3. Click Edit in the Action column for that group.

4. Update the Attribute Group Name for any language and/or change the Sort
   Order.

5. Click Save, Apply, or Cancel as when creating.

Important: language descriptions are fully replaced on save, not partially
updated. Changing the sort order affects the display order of the group (and
its attributes) on product forms and the storefront.

EXAMPLE: EDIT THE "Specifications" GROUP

Goal: rename the group for clarity and move it below Dimensions in display
order.

  1. Catalog > Attributes > Attribute Groups
  2. Find "Specifications" > Edit
  3. Attribute Group Name (English): Technical Specifications
  4. Sort Order: 3
  5. Click Save

Result: the list shows "Technical Specifications" with Sort Order 3.
Attributes previously assigned to this group remain linked; only the group
name and display order change.

DELETE: STEP-BY-STEP

1. Go to Catalog > Attributes > Attribute Groups.

2. Check the box(es) next to the group or groups to delete.
(Use the header checkbox to select all groups on the current page.)

3. Click the Delete button.

4. Confirm the dialog when prompted ("Delete/Uninstall cannot be undone!
Are you sure you want to do this?").

5. If deletion succeeds, a success message is shown and the list refreshes.

Important: a group cannot be deleted while any attributes are still assigned
to it. If attributes exist in the group, the warning
"This attribute group cannot be deleted as it is currently assigned to X
attributes!" is displayed and no rows are removed. Reassign or delete those
attributes first under Catalog > Attributes.

EXAMPLE: DELETE AN UNUSED ATTRIBUTE GROUP

Goal: remove a test group "Dimensions" that has no attributes assigned.

  1. Catalog > Attributes > Attribute Groups
  2. Check the box for "Dimensions"
  3. Click Delete > Confirm

Result: the Dimensions group and its language descriptions are removed from
the database.

EXAMPLE: DELETE BLOCKED WHEN ATTRIBUTES EXIST

Goal: attempt to delete "Specifications" which contains attributes such as
"Screen Size" and "Battery Life".

  1. Catalog > Attributes > Attribute Groups
  2. Check the box for "Specifications"
  3. Click Delete > Confirm

Result: deletion fails with a warning showing how many attributes are
assigned (for example, "Warning: This attribute group cannot be deleted as it
is currently assigned to 2 attributes!"). To proceed:

  a. Go to Catalog > Attributes.
  b. Edit each attribute in the group and assign it to a different group, or
     delete the attributes.
  c. Return to Attribute Groups and delete "Specifications" again.

USING ATTRIBUTE GROUPS WITH ATTRIBUTES

After an attribute group exists:

  1. Go to Catalog > Attributes > Attributes (or Catalog > Attributes from
     the submenu).
  2. Create or edit an attribute and choose the Attribute Group from the
     dropdown (populated from existing groups).
  3. Save the attribute.

  4. Open Catalog > Products and edit or create a product.
  5. On the product form, add attributes from the available groups.
  6. Save the product.

Attribute groups do not store attribute values themselves; they only group
attribute definitions. Product-specific values are entered on each product.
